The Art of Craftsmanship at Royal-Pedic
At Royal-Pedic, craftsmanship is a way of life that has been carefully preserved and passed down through generations. Since 1946, every mattress we create reflects our dedication to traditional techniques, human hands, and unwavering attention to detail. Our founder, Abe Kaplan, began with a deep belief in quality over speed, carefully selecting the finest natural materials and building each mattress with purpose and care.
That same philosophy continues today in our Los Angeles workshop, where skilled artisans, many of whom have spent decades honing their craft, hand-assemble every mattress with precision and pride. Each layer is thoughtfully placed, each stitch made with intention, and every product reflects a legacy of excellence. This is not automated manufacturing. It is a deliberate and artful process that honors both the sleeper and the materials themselves.
Our craftsmen are more than mattress makers. They are stewards of tradition, guardians of quality, and creators of lasting comfort. When you sleep on a Royal-Pedic mattress, you experience the result of true mastery, designed to restore, built to endure, and crafted with care. This is not just craftsmanship. This is the art of making rest royal.
Royal-Pedic has been dedicated to promoting healthful sleep for 80 years.
Through combining the finest natural and hypoallergenic materials from around the world, with expert hand craftsmanship, our mattresses have comforted film celebrities, Presidents of the U.S., royalty and sports superstars. Not because of who they are, but for what they want — a restful, re-energizing, truly good night’s sleep so they can feel good and perform at their best.
Royal-Pedic utilizes the most premium natural ingredients imaginable — elegant cotton fabrics, untreated wool from France, latex mattress cores manufactured in The Netherlands and pristine long fiber cotton grown in the USA.
Layering Staple Cotton
Layers of premium quality, staple cotton padding ensure a consistent, supportive sleeping surface. Our cotton is pre-compressed and hand-tufted so you won’t get lumps or shifting of materials. We use only the finest cotton batting from California and Texas. Natural materials ventilate body heat and provide greater durability than polyurethane foam – the main padding ingredient found in many other mattresses.
Hand-Tufting
Hand tufting is a process our company founder, Abe Kaplan learned in the 1930’s back in the day when it was common to make hand tufted mattresses using layers of natural materials surrounding innersprings. At Royal-Pedic, we still employ these time tested hand crafting techniques because quality has always been more important to us than how fast we can make a mattress.
In the hand tufting process, the skilled worker attaches a British tufting strap to a long needle and inserts it through the mattress, and then goes underneath the mattress and pulls out the needle from the underside leaving the tufting strap in place compressing the materials for exceptional orthopedic back support and to minimize body impressions. The worker does this process by inserting approximately 59 tufts to make one queen size mattress!
